Changes to Repeat Prescription Ordering From the 1st August 2021

After many years of accepting repeat prescription requests over the telephone and following discussions within the Practice and research within the local area, we have taken the decision to stop taking prescription requests over the telephone from 1st August 2021. The first and most important reason is safety. We are getting increased numbers of discrepancies between what the patient says they have ordered and what has been requested by the surgery team. Mistakes are likely to be due to confusion with drug names.  The Practice is getting busier and busier with more people on repeat medication for ever increasing complex conditions. The decision was made to stop the taking of prescriptions over the telephone to minimise the risk of a potential error causing a significant event. We hope in making the change it will free up our phone lines for patients contacting us for other queries. We understand that this might not be popular with some patients, but we hope you will understand that safety is of the paramount importance.

You can request your repeat medication by the following methods:

• Order online – using the NHS app. Information about ordering online is available below - you can download the app onto your mobile/ipad/laptop or home computer
• Using your repeat slip (right hand side of green prescription) – ticking the items you need to order and handing/posting this slip into the Practice. There are 2 post boxes available, 1 outside the Practice on the wall next to the entrance door and 1 inside the doorway on the wall.

Please note this will not alter the time it takes to process a repeat prescription which is 3 working days

Mental Health Freephone telephone number

If you experience mental health problems, it can be frightening and you may feel alone.   If a persons mental or emotional state gets worse quickly this can be referred to as a mental health crisis or a mental health emergency.
We are asking our patients to make a note of the freephone crisis helpline number in case you should need it in the event of a mental health crisis. The freephone crisis helpline number, 0800 0516171, is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone, of any age, living in North Yorkshire. Callers are diverted to local crisis teams by following a series of options. Further information is available at

Do you need to see a doctor?

Patients can now self refer to a number of services without seeing a GP and doing so means you can get the treatment you need faster than if you see a GP.
  • Physiotherapy: If you have a painful muscle or joint, physiotherapy can often be the best treatment.
    • First Contact Physio: If you have not seen a doctor about your problem you can book an appointment with a physiotherapist, usually within a few days, via reception. These appointments are usually at Harewood Medical Practice in Catterick Garrison.
    • Physio Direct: If you have already seen a doctor about your problem then you can go through the physio direct service on 01609 763747. They can offer telephone support and also face to face appointments at Northallerton and Richmond.
  • Mental Health: If you need to be seen urgently because of a mental health problem then you should present to the doctors at the practice, or even A&E, in the usual way. The services below are options for people who need to be seen less urgently or who are looking for some self help resources.
    • First Contact Mental Health Practitioner: We have a Mental health practitioner based at the surgery, currently 2 days a week.  You can book appointments directly with her either F2F or over the telephone.  Please speak to reception to book.
    • IAPT: IAPT stands for Improving Access to Psychological Therapies. They are the main counselling service and this is where we refer most of our patients who need talking therapy. Their website is here or they can be telephoned on 01609 768890.
    • Mindfulness: Mindfulness is an excellent method for dealing with anxiety symptoms, poor sleep and a range of other problems and patients can now book onto a course to learn the various techniques they can use. We often signpost this course to patients and feedback from those who have done it has been very positive. You can self refer by phoning 01325 552017. Their website is here. Further information can be found here.
    • Recovery College: Recovery college is a website with a wealth of self help material for those with experience of mental illness, from people who suffer themselves to their families, carers, friends and staff. It can be found here.
